A Stroke Can Lead to Nirvana?

Written by Chuck Guilford

Jill Bolte TaylorAccording to Jill Bolte Taylor, the answer is a definite, "Yes." After a 1993 stroke left this medical professor in "LaLa Land," she was forced to relearn how to think and to live. In the process, and with her mother's help, she discovered a whole new side of herself. As she developed her right brain's capacity to think holistically and intuitively, she also experienced a deeper sense of compassion and interconnectedness that she has come to see in spiritual terms. Aging In Britain

Written by Chuck Guilford

With Mick Jagger about to turn 65 and Sir Paul McCartney already there, England's Guardian takes a look at how Jagger and others are dealing with this time in their lives. One story, "You calling us old? We never felt so young," focuses on how British attitudes and policies on aging are changing in response to the changing times, and in a separate interview, McCartney discusses his support of the Paralympics and other related topics.

Overmedication Alert

Written by Chuck Guilford

A recent article in The New York Times documents the dangerous increase in prescription medications being given to persons diagnosed with dementia. Not only are anti-psychotic drugs overused and misused, but elderly patients aren't tested properly to determine the true causes of their problems (for example, simple dehydration or hypothyroidism could be contributing to dementia symptoms).

Also, there can be other ways, based on the individuals and their backgrounds and interests, for calming agitation in people with dementia. If this is a concern for you or someone you love, read this article and talk to your doctor.

Written by Chuck Guilford

Here's a great summary of the latest studies on how exercise helps roll back the negative effects of aging: "Fit, Not Frail: Exercise as a Tonic for Aging." In addition to stressing the ways that regular exercise helps us to maintain our strength, balance, and flexibility throughout life, the article emphasizes the ability of regular exercise to help prevent many of the chronic diseases often associated with aging. You'll also find advice about how to get started on an exercise program and links to specific exercise activities.
